Part II: The Battle to be First

As the benefits of conversational AI chatbots become evident, companies at the cutting edge of technology are racing to implement these ideas in practice.

The blue ribbon goes to OpenAI, which has released its open-source ChatGPT tech to the public. From marketers to researchers to government and business representatives, humans interact with ChatGPT millions of times daily and get answers to sometimes difficult questions.

Meanwhile, Google is still announcing the beta phase of its Bard offering that runs on the Google Language Model for Dialogue (LaMDa) application, not to be confused with Amazon’s AWS Lambda serverless computing platform.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has used ChatGPT as at least part of the engine for its new Bing technology that is up and running and answering user questions.

“So far, the new Bing feels like it’s been supercharged,” write CNBC authors, “and at the very least, people might want to try it out to see if it satisfies them more than traditional search engines that billions of people have come to know in the past 25 years.”

Microsoft seems to come out ahead by taking a more collaborative approach with OpenAI. People are excited about the Bing bot’s ability to deliver nuanced, targeted results to complex questions.

Google, for its part, is working hard to catch up

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models,” writes Google CEO Sundar Pichai Feb. 6. “It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now and then get drills to build your skills.”

That sounds good, but experts suggest that due to the delayed pivot, Google will have an uphill battle in getting market share from other early adopters.

A New World of Chat and Search

Over time, other competitors will emerge. But ChatGPT is now a household name widely seen as the fundamental basis for AI chat technologies.
