Brand Guidelines

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition: Brand guidelines (also called a brand style guide or brand standards document) are a comprehensive reference document that defines the visual and verbal rules for how a brand presents itself consistently across every medium and touchpoint. They specify how the logo may and may not be used, the official colour palette with exact values, approved typefaces and their application rules, photography and imagery style, tone of voice, and the core messaging framework — providing a single source of truth for anyone creating materials on behalf of the brand.

Why It Matters: Brand consistency is directly linked to revenue — research from Lucidpress found that consistent brand presentation can increase revenue by 10–20% on average. Without documented guidelines, every designer, copywriter, agency, and team member makes independent interpretations of how the brand should look and sound, resulting in a fragmented presentation that erodes recognition and trust over time. Brand guidelines ensure that whether a customer encounters the brand on a website, a business card, a social media post, or a trade show banner, the experience is coherent and unmistakably consistent. For businesses working with external agencies or freelancers, brand guidelines are essential for maintaining quality control without micromanagement.

How It Works: Brand guidelines are typically produced as part of a branding or rebranding project and are delivered as a PDF document, interactive website, or shared folder containing template files. Core sections include: brand story and values (the why behind the visual choices), logo guidelines (primary and secondary logo versions, minimum sizes, clear space rules, approved and prohibited uses), colour palette (primary and secondary colours with HEX, RGB, CMYK, and Pantone values for digital and print use), typography (primary and secondary typefaces with hierarchy rules and fallback web fonts), imagery and photography style (art direction, subject matter, tone, prohibited imagery), and tone of voice (personality attributes, writing examples, vocabulary guidance). Digital asset files (logo SVGs, EPS, PNGs, fonts) are included alongside the guidelines document.
