Mood Board

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition: A mood board is a visual collage — typically a curated collection of images, colour swatches, typographic examples, textures, patterns, and design references — assembled during the early stages of a design or branding project to explore, define, and communicate a visual direction. It is a creative briefing tool used to establish aesthetic tone before detailed design work begins, aligning client and designer around a shared visual language.

Why It Matters: Mood boards are one of the most effective tools for preventing misalignment between what a client imagines and what a designer produces. Abstract words like “modern,” “premium,” or “friendly” mean different things to different people — a mood board makes those concepts concrete and visual, enabling clients to react to actual examples rather than descriptions. By identifying the desired aesthetic direction early — before any logo, layout, or colour palette has been created — mood boards prevent costly revisions later in the design process. They also serve as a reference point throughout the project, keeping decisions anchored to the agreed-upon direction.

How It Works: Mood boards are typically created using design tools like Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, or purpose-built platforms like Milanote and Miro. Images are sourced from design inspiration sites (Behance, Dribbble, Pinterest, Awwwards), stock photography libraries, and real-world brand examples. A mood board for a branding project typically includes: colour palette ideas, font pairing examples, logo style references, photography and imagery tone, illustration or pattern examples if relevant, and examples of brands or campaigns with a similar aesthetic. Multiple mood board options (usually two to three distinct directions) may be presented to give the client genuine choices. Client feedback on the mood board informs the design direction before any original creative work is produced.
