Zero-Click Search

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition: A zero-click search occurs when a user’s query is answered directly within the search engine results page (SERP) — through a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview, local pack, or instant answer — without the user needing to click through to any website. The search engine itself serves as the destination.

Why It Matters: Zero-click searches have grown significantly with the expansion of Google’s SERP features and, more recently, AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience). Studies by SparkToro and others have consistently found that a majority of Google searches now result in zero clicks. For SEOs and content marketers, this means ranking first is no longer sufficient — winning the featured snippet or appearing in AI-summarised answers is increasingly the real prize. It also challenges traditional traffic-based content ROI models.

How It Works: Google identifies queries likely to be answered definitively (definitions, conversions, calculations, simple facts, local business hours) and surfaces structured answers at the top of the SERP. Featured snippets are pulled from indexed pages Google judges most authoritative for the query. AI Overviews synthesise answers from multiple sources, with citations. To appear in these features, content should use clear heading structures, concise definitions, structured data markup, and FAQ schema where relevant.
